What fictional high school—from tv, film, or a book—would you most like to attend? Or would you rather never go near high school again, fictional or otherwise?

Obviously the paradoxotaur. This creature only exists if you do not believe it exists...

i'm still not used to going to a school where there are asian tourists by the bus load taking pictures around campus 24/7. not that it's bad, just different. everything else is pretty good here. i'll update with more soon, promise.

ALSO,
i'm only separated from michael phelps by 1 person. so that makes me more famous than you, =P

From my blog... [Feb. 5th, 2008|11:44 pm]
"Choosing to be a grad student is a poor life decision."

In the past couple of weeks, I've had 2 interviews: NYU and Princeton. Both are great schools, but a bit different from each other in a few ways. I was fortunate to have done research at both schools over the last 2 summers. Here are my thoughts-

NYU Sackler Institute (at the School of Medicine)
+Lots of money
+/- Living in NYC
-Expensive, small housing (duh)
--Too many labs for me to try to keep track of
+Nice, new, shiny building
+Really nice staff
-Isolated atmosphere of labs
++ REALLY close to home, family, and friends
-Can't bring my car

Princeton
++Very nice, warm department feel. Everybody knows each other.
--Princeton is maybe the most boring town... ever.
-Housing is slightly awkward. Most first year students end up in a dorm-like situation (no kitchen, shared bathrooms).
++I know who I'd like to do rotations with already
++The grad students seem genuinely happy with their work.
++Seems VERY social: study groups, first year lunches, retreats, etc.
- The campus is geared towards the undergrads more than grad students
+++ Amazing science is going on there
+Close to home

Both interview weekends were sooo cool though. I'm sure those of you involved in biology have had at least 1 interview so far. The programs usually describe the path to the PhD, introduce you to current students, give tours of the campuses, and pit you 1-on-1 with a faculty member in an "interview". Now, these interviews can be all out, hardcore sessions, or (as in the case with all of the Princeton professors) really laid back and essentially involves listening to the scientist describe what he or she loves so much.

Essentially, I can't wait until grad school. Oh yeah, I have been officially rejected from Berkeley, but that's okay! I'll use the same philosophy I use with girls that don't love me: if you don't want me, why should I want you? =P

In conclusion, Princeton is winning. I've been officially accepted to NYU, but I have a good feeling about being accepted to the former. This week I head to Seattle to go see the wonderful University of Washington. Next week I get to see Harvard. Then I'm off from traveling for a week (thank god) before heading to Stanford. After that is my spring break and it also looks like the end of my interview saga.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment or contact me. I'd love to talk more, I just have a lot of catching up to do!

-Jason

really, i've learned that grad students are jaded and cynical. the two people i get along with the best are my 25 and 26 year old grad students. from what they say, life here is very similar to the life at RIT. less snow, but much more annoying when it does snow.

i'm off to eli lilly and company in indianapolis this morning. i'll be there until friday morning, when i fly back into lagaurdia and take a bus to a symposium in stamford, ct.

i think if i expect the worst travel experience, it can't be so bad.
be back on sunday, see ya.

[Current Mood | frustrated]

i've been having the most severe deja vu the last two days...
not even like one minute or scene, but hour long stretches when i could have sworn i've lived through them before.

i wonder if it actually means anything.

things have been pretty rocky lately, but maybe it's getting better. i don't know.
i'll update later. peace.

what are your biggest pet peeves?

mine:
1. "could care less" instead of "couldn't care less"
2. seeing beautiful girls smoking
3. walking into a bathroom stall that MUST have been used by a blind man
